I caught this "baby" pike while bass fishing with a buddy this summer on the Pend Orielle River. (my buddy is posing with the fish)

We had heard about the pike in the river, and seeings how the bass fishing was really slow, we decided to try for some pike.

Neither one of us have really fished for pike before, but we knew of a couple methods people use to catch them. We didn't have the bait or floats to use the baiting method, so we put on a couple daredevil spoons and started tossing them around.

We did this for a while and nothing was happening so we started drifting to try different spots. I would cast and watch my spoon as it swiveled up towards the boat, and sure enough, PIKE! I had a follow up that about made me swallow my heart. It was huge!

I told my buddy what I just saw and I started laughing. He was like what's so funny???
I said that fish was as big as my leg! We were both excited, but he still didn't know why I was laughing so I had to explain.

We were using 8lb test and had no leaders. There was no way we were going to hook into a fish like that AND land it!

Anyway, that thought quickly vanished as we continued tossing our spoons around. We had a few more follow ups by some very intimidating monsters, but the only one we got to take our spoon was this baby pike in the picture.
Yes, it's very small, but it's my first pike ever!

We plan on going back next summer (properly equipped) to see if we can haul in a couple of those monsters.

We went back to Pend Orielle River to fish for pike on friday.

Spent an entire day up there throwing everything at them from swim baits, crank baits, top waters, and spoons. Had one follow up that we saw and I hooked into one that managed to fight free before I could bring him in.

It seemed to be really slow for pike, and we had only a couple strikes from some small bass and perch.

We launched in Cusick and fished both banks for a 2 mile stretch heading towards Newport.

Pictured below is a perch that decided to attack my buddy's swim bait. Don't know what he was thinking, but he obviously lost the fight.

Anyone out there been fishing for pike on the Pend Orielle River? If so, how did/are you doing? Where are you fishing for them exactly, and what are you using?

Is it better to fish for them in the Spring?

Myself and a buddy gave it another try last weekend on the Pend Orielle River. Figured we'd try it while the water/weather is still cool, but asside from a single follow up, it was dead.

We know they are in there, but we're still trying to figure out the trick. I would love to hear from someone that has success fishing for these pike on this particular river system. Perhaps we could trade some infomation?

Might try poking around on the MN, WI, and MI fishing forums especially MN.  They only speak two languages back there...Norwegian and Walleye.

Thanks for the pointer Wdstk3, I will do a little research for those areas and see if I can pick up a thing or two from it.

I found some information online for pike on the Washington side of the Pend Orielle River, including tournaments they hold each year for them.

From what i've read, I guess they start feeding more in April and May and start moving to the shallows.

Hopefully this spring/summer, I will hook into one those big boys and post up a picture for everyone.

Finally, success!!
Though I had to work and couldn't join him, my buddy saw quite a bit of action on the Pend Orielle River on friday using buzz baits.

I'm hoping to head up with him next time he's going.

Good job Rory!

Got out with my buddy this time on sunday. We got 7 in the boat... mostly smaller ones, but a couple weren't bad. Had a ton of hits, including missing a couple monster pike! Something i've learned real quick about these fish... you definately lose more than you catch! But, wow, such a cool fish to fish for. We used buzz baits, and released all of them.

A buddy of mine caught this largemouth on the Pend Orielle River while fishing for pike with buzz baits. 5+ pounds.

Though I don't have much luck with the bass in that river system, they're obviously in there. lol

You know how you always have that one person in your group of friends who can catch a fish in a lake that doesn't even have fish? Yep, that would be this guy. LOL!
